retour Eglise Sainte-Madeleine – Church

Verneuil 17The original church was built in the 12th century. The ongoing construction work kept bringing embellishment to the church over the centuries.

Inside, 15th and 16th century sculptures and stained glasses can be admired. At the time, they were financed by rich Verneuil inhabitants and craftmen.

Alongside the nave, the impressive 56 meter high tower bell is a truly magnificient piece of flamboyant gothic style. Its construction started around 1465 and was achieved in 1526 thanks to local donations. Among them, Artus Fillon, an influencial religious figure of the time.

The carved stones and sculptures were made by artists who also worked on the Rouen cathedral. The tower is built in limestone with a sandstone bedrock and presents 2 carved stone crowns nested in each other. More than 30 statues decorate the tower on 2 levels : figures of the Old Testament on the lower level and figures of the New Testament on the second level.

The tower as well as the “Tour de Beurre” of Rouen cathedral have inspired Chicago Tribune’s tower ‘s architecture.

Open to the public every day from 8 am to 18 pm (20 pm over the summer months).
