avrilly 27195The castrale clod is a medieval  defence building work considered as the precursor of the fortified castle. You find at Avrilly the remains of a stone donjon, the bailey, several walls, two towers, the fortified entrance and 12 meter (40 feet) deep moats.

The Avrilly domain was given in the 10th century by Rollon to one of his companions, Bernard le Danois, whom the Harcourt family descends from. The fortress, set on fire and taken over by the English in 1418, was never rebuilt.

Half an hour guided tour, accompanied by 3 persons dressed in epoch clothing. Please book at least 48 hours in advance.


Parking for cars and bus.

Access to disabled to the lower level only.

Pets on a leash welcome.
