Breteuil © Philippe PrudhommeThis little town has been awarded “Village fleuri”, meaning flowery village. A river gets through the village which is set along side a forest.

Breteuil-sur-Iton has a rich history : as early as 1054, William the Conqueror fortified the village to reinforce the position of the Norman Duchy against the attacks of the King of France. The fortress was surrounded by water filled moats. Number of archers and lords of Breteuil took part in the England conquest in 1066 during Hasting Battle.

What to discover walking around in the streets of Breteuil-sur-Iton :

  • Museum Vie et Métiers d’Autrefois.
  • Saint Sulpice Church , listed religious building : open every day from 9 am to 7 pm. William the Conqueror ‘s daughter Adèle got married in the church in 1081.
  • Laffitte Square where the town hall was built in 1840. The château is known for one of its Renaissance door.
  • Public garden : lovely parc alleys, trees and lake where swans and ducks live.

 

Number of cafés and restaurants welcome you for a well deserved break.

Not to be missed : Wednesday’s market on the main square.
